Sydney's municipal operations will be fully powered by renewable energy from next year.

The City of Sydney announced on the 28th that it has successfully signed the largest local government renewable energy agreement in Australia, with a total value of more than 60 million Australian dollars. The plan will achieve the City of Sydney's goal of relying entirely on wind and solar resources to meet the electricity needs of municipal operations.
Including the historic Sydney City Hall, all operations under the Sydney City Government such as swimming pools, libraries, playgrounds, supply depots, and municipal buildings will be fully powered by renewable energy from July 1, 2020.
The full realization of the renewable energy supply commitment will effectively reduce the Sydney City Government's energy consumption funds for the next ten years, with an average annual value of 500000 Australian dollars.
Sydney Mayor Croft Moore believes that the city government can reach this agreement with innovative energy company Flow Power can significantly promote employment, provide substantial help to the drought-stricken areas of New South Wales, and further reduce emissions. She said: "The science proves that climate change will spiral out of control if action is not taken soon over the next decade to urge a concerted global effort to reduce emissions. The new agreement plans to allow municipalities to achieve an average annual operational emission reduction of 20000 tonnes, equivalent to the total electricity consumption of 8000 local residents."
It is known that through the agreement with Flow Power, the City of Sydney can use wind energy to provide 3/4 electricity for its operations, and the remaining 1/4 is done by solar energy.
Matthew van der Linden, president of Flow Power, believes that the City of Sydney's emphasis and commitment to renewable energy has made Australia's national energy consumption system a crucial step in the future low-carbon transition. He said: "We are excited that the City of Sydney has made renewable energy a cornerstone of its overall energy strategy. Through this agreement, the City can take advantage of the wholesale energy market and breathe life into the renewable energy supply system. This is a forward-looking move that will bring us together into a new era of energy. We need the major institutions to lead by example in the implementation of the energy strategy."
